Happy at home

Wipe that moody look off your face and start making the most of all the action right here on your doorstep.

Reasons why we love the UK:

  • No passport required
    Nothing to declare, or leave behind accidentally in some dodgy hostel;
  • You speak the language fluently
    No phrase books or embarrassing misunderstandings;
  • Your entire wardrobe, on the rail
    No need to wash your only shirt every day;
  • All your mates, on tap
    Head abroad and you're stuck with the same small group of friends until you fly back. At home, you can pick and choose, or hang out with everyone (providing they haven't all buggered off abroad without you);
  • Your summer holiday lasts an entire season.
    So what if the sun doesn't shine every day? At least when it does come out you can guarantee you'll be around to make the most of it;
  • Accidents and emergencies are easier to handle.
    Break your legs, anywhere in the country, and chances are you won't be requiring an expensive airlift home or a visit from the consulate;
  • You're doing your bit for the economy
    Squander your cash on clubbing, but through the tax you might be paying on booze and fags, you'll be helping to pay for our country's schools, roads and hospitals. It's a theory!
  • You're in a beautiful country
    From Newquay to Newcastle, Bournemouth to Brighton, the UK has it all. We're talking about beaches, clubs and bars, breathtaking sights, buzzing cities and wildlife of every variety - even human.

Festivals

Festivals aren't just about hippies these days you know. Some of the biggest names in dance music now rake in massive crowds and put on unbelievable shows. Check out eFestivals to find out what's on this summer.

Clubs

Rather have a roof over your head? Devote your summer to a debauched drive around the country in search of the most outrageous clubs. All you've gotta do is get your arse down to your club of choice and shake it 'till the early hours. Then you can gloat about the fact that you didn't pay £25 to get in like your friends in Ibiza.

Special events

Local organisations and venues spend heaps of time and money setting up events for the summer months. From the drunken (beer festivals are always a winner) to the downright bizarre (do you fancy you chances in a nettle-eating contest?), there's a lot more going on than most of us give credit for - and often you can wander in completely free. The trick is to do your homework and know what's happening. Most local authorities list events on their website and many areas have excellent sites to promote venues and events. Stay beady-eyed for leaflets when you're in libraries, bars and shops, and get yourself on as many mailing lists to different venues as you can. Search Whatsonwhen for details of gigs, events and festivals near you and start filling up that diary.
