Festivals in September 2008
Get details of all the great festivals happening in September.
Bestival
What: A three-day 'boutique' festival in the Isle of Wight. Radio 1's Rob da Bank has hand picked the line up, whilst his wife Josie has been responsible for the creative side of the festival, such as the Bollywood Cocktail Bar and The Inflatable Church. Fancy dress is a must, with this year's theme being '30,000 Freaks Under The Sea'.
Where: Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight
When: Friday 5 to Sunday 7 September
Line-up: Artists include Aphex Twin, Pendulum, Roots Manuva, Foals, My Bloody Valentine, CSS, Amy Winehouse, Hot Chip, The Breeders and Underworld.
Cost: An adult weekend ticket costs £130. There are also campervan tickets priced at £50.
Camping: The cost of camping is included in the ticket price. For those wanting a cosmopolitan festival experience, there are options to hire a range of customised accommodation such as bivouacs and tipis at an additional cost.
Transport: Wightlink and Red Funnel will be offering ferry services over to the Isle of Wight, both for passengers and vehicles. Hovertravel offer a 10-minute hovercraft from Portsmouth to Ryde Town. South West Trains and National Express are running trains and coaches respectively from all over the UK to Wightlink's Portsmouth Ferry Terminal. This year, 12 people will be swimming across the Solent to the festival, who you may see from the relative comfort of the ferry!
Parking: There will be a car park just next to the festival site.
The Sugarhill Festival
What: Set in an arable farm near Swindon, the Sugarhill Festival hosts new and established indie acts, as well as local bands. Look out for the local ales and ciders on draught too!
Where: Warren Farm, Liddlington
When: Friday 5 to Sunday 7 September
Line-up: Expect to see The Young Knives, Johnny Foreigner, Ida Maria, Tom Baxter, The Dykeenies and Esser.
Cost: A standard weekend adult ticket costs £50, with day tickets at £30. 13 to 17 year-olds can get a day ticket for £25 and a weekend ticket for £35.
Camping: Camping is included with the weekend tickets.
Transport: National Express run services to Swindon and the nearest train stations are Swindon and Hungerford. The festival is a few miles from M4 Junction 15. The local bus routes do not run near the festival site, so booking a taxi from the train/bus station is recommended.
End Of The Road Festival
What: Set amongst some beautiful gardens, the End Of The Road Festival places a strong emphasis on an anti-corporate vibe. The organisers have ensured to book more leftfield bands that are not on the 'festival trail'. Local food and drink will be available and bands will be spotted throughout the festival, not just in the backstage area!
Where: Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorset
When: Friday 12 to Sunday 14 September
Line-up: Conor Oberst, A Hawk and A Hacksaw, Mercury Rev, British Sea Power, Laura Marling, Two Gallants, Bon Iver, Let's Wrestle, Brakes, Jeffrey Lewis, Calexico and Richard Hawley are all confirmed to play at this year's festival.
Cost: An adult weekend ticket costs £105.
Camping: Camping is free of weekend ticket holders, though those bringing a campervan must pay an additional £30.
Transport: The nearest train station is Salisbury. Consult AA route planner rather than using sat nav if travelling by car. There is also a lift share scheme in operation.
Parking: There will be a separate field for parking, with spaces costing £5.
Sound Sanctuary
What: Three days of live music in the Kent countryside with upmarket food stalls and even an onsite art gallery!
Where: Eridge Park, Tunbridge Wells
When: Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September
Line-up: Acts at this year's festival include: Joe Lean and The Jing Jang Jong, Sugababes, M People, Jocelyn Brown, Tom Baxter, Sandi Thom and Seth Lakeman.
Cost: There is no camping at the festival, so tickets are available individually for each of the three days. Tickets for the first day are priced at £25 (13 to 19 year-olds only), tickets for the second are at £37.50 and tickets for the third day are at £35.
Transport: An hour's drive from London. The nearest train station is Tunbridge Wells. On arrival at the train station, take the number 29 bus to Brighton, getting off at Eridge Park.
