I know this is probably going to sound a little stupid but it's really bothering me. My girlfriend has been told that semen is toxic and so she won't go down on me because she thinks it's going to kill her. Is this true?

We're not sure exactly what your girlfriend was told or what she means by toxic, but semen is unlikely to kill her. It's important to remember that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are passed on through semen (and vaginal fluids) so it is possible to pass on STIs through oral sex.
To reduce the risk of infection, a condom can be used for oral sex. Dental dams (small squares of latex) can also be used as a barrier during contact between the mouth and the vagina, or the mouth and the anus.
If you are concerned about STIs, you can go for a check-up at your local genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic. GUM clinics offer free, confidential routine screening for STIs.
