Pierced penis

Question

My boyfriend's penis is pierced and whenever we have sex I end up bleeding. Why is this?

Answer

Your partner's piercing could be causing the bleeding, so you might want to ask him to take the piercing out or you could use an extra-strong condom. But it could also be a symptom of something else.

If you have had sex before without problems, and this is something that has only started to happen recently, it's worth visiting your local doctor (GP) or a doctor based at a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic for a check-up because bleeding during sex can sometimes be the sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

If you'd like to speak to a nurse before you visit a doctor, you can call the fpa helpline on 0845 310 1334, or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Or, if you'd like more information or advice about sex and contraception, you can visit your local Brook Centre, family planning clinic or GP.
