Question

I'm on the combined pill and was wondering whether it's safe to take St John's Wort supplements at the same time.

Answer

Unfortunately, certain herbal medicines, including St John's Wort, can cause the combined pill to be ineffective. It's important you tell the person who supplies your pill about any medication you're taking because you may need to change your method of contraception.

If you'd like more information you can speak to a nurse by calling the fpa Helpline on 0845 310 1334, or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Alternatively, you can get medical advice from a doctor at your local Brook Centre, family planning clinic or from your doctor (GP). Or, if you want to discuss your situation, you can call the Brook Freephone Helpline on 0800 0185 023.
