Fluid flummox

Question

After I have sex with my boyfriend I notice fluid comes out of my vagina. Is this normal?

Answer

It isn't clear from your message whether you are asking if it is normal for a woman to ejaculate after orgasm, or if it is normal for ejaculated semen to come out of a woman's vagina after sex.

When a woman is aroused, her vagina can become very wet, and an orgasm might lead to a further release of vaginal fluids. She can continue being sexually aroused and some women can experience more than one orgasm without stopping; this is called having multiple orgasms. A small number of women also experience a release of fluid from the urethra, after G-spot stimulation, known as female ejaculation. This is completely normal.

If you have sex without a condom, then your vagina will expel a man's ejaculated semen in the days following sex.

If you are having or planning to have sex, it is important to think about using contraception to help reduce the risks of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

You can get advice about different types of contraception from your local doctor (GP), family planning clinic or Brook Centres (if you are under 25). The service will be free and confidential. If you want to discuss your situation, you can call the Brook Freephone Helpline on 0800 0185 023.
