Diseased dildo

Question

My partner and I were considering using sex toys to spice up our sex-life but I'm not sure how safe they are, is it possible to catch an infection from sharing that sort of thing?

Answer

For specific information about the safety of a particular sex toy most are usually provided with an instruction leaflet, including safety instructions. You might want to seek further information regarding the safety or how to use them from the manufacturer or from a local Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic.

You need to be aware that sex toys should be washed after each use. Sharing sex toys with someone else can pass on some sexually transmitted infections. If you use toys such as vibrators or dildos that someone else also uses (or that you use with someone else), it is important to put a new condom on for each partner and activity to help reduce risk. Do not use the same sex toy for vaginal sex after using it in the anal area, as you could transfer bacteria  which may cause a vaginal infection.

If infections are left untreated, they can get worse and other problems can occur. Most sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are treatable. You can get advice on how to reduce the risk of infection from your local GUM clinic. If you're under 25 you can also talk to someone, in confidence, about anything to do with sex and relationships, at your nearest Brook Centre.
