How to ensure you come back in one piece.
Photocopy documentation
Make two copies of all your important paperwork - one set to leave at home, in case your family need to come to the rescue and one set to take with you.
Webmail
Use a web-based email account to send yourself the info you might need in an emergency.
Buy a padlock and chain
You never know when it might come in useful - from stashing your luggage while you take a pee at the airport, to gaining a little privacy in a shower with a busted door.
Drink and drugs
You might assume that it's OK to drink or buy drugs in certain locations, but many countries have harsh penalties for this sort of thing. Most guidebooks have a section on local laws and regulations, so do your research and don't take risks.
Stay aware of your surroundings at all times, especially if you're out drinking. Whatever state you get yourself into, know how to get back to where you're staying and save enough money for a taxi home.
