Question

I've been living in America for the last three years and I didnt have car insurance in the UK during that period. Before I left, I had a no claims bonus and now I'm back in Britain, I'd like to be able to carry that over. How do I find out if there's an insurance company that'll let me do that?

Answer

First of all, you should try your former insurance company and see if they can help. Insurance companies in the UK keep a record of people that have insured with them for about five years and it is possible that your previous no claims bonus may be recorded on their central computer.

If you have no luck with them, you can find out if there is an insurance company that'll let you carry over your no claims discount through an insurance broker. An insurance broker is an intermediary who advises clients on insurance policies and arranges their insurance. You could also try the AA or RAC, and see if they can direct you to an insurance company that will accept you.
