Ex in debt

Question

I lent my ex-boyfriend some money a while ago and he's not paid any of it back yet. How do I, or can I, get my money back? I want no contact with him myself as he's already tried to get me into trouble with the police.

Answer

If you don't want to talk to your ex about the money he owes, you may have to take him to the small claims court. You can get information about how to do this from the Court Service website.

Depending on how far you want to take the matter, if he owes you over £750, you could make him bankrupt. You can find out more about how to do this from the Insolvency Service.

Before embarking with legal proceedings, it's probably best to consider if the amount he has borrowed is worth the effort involved in recovering the money. Obviously that isn't a nice situation to be in, but it's worth considering.

Alternatively, if you want to get your money back  without going to court, the best option may be to try talking to him to persuade him to pay you back.
