Discount for dad?

Question

I'm a student living at home with my Dad. While I'm still in education, does this mean he is entitled to a discount on his council tax?

Answer

Under council tax guidelines, your father is entitled to make a claim for a second adult rebate on his Council Tax providing he is the only adult in the property. This means that if your mother, or any other adult, is living at home as well then he will not qualify.

Quite simply, the tax works on the basis of two liable adults in the property. If only one adult is resident then there is a 25% discount.

If your father wants to claim the second adult rebate he should contact the local council and ask them to send the relevant form. It is possible that it will be combined with a Council Tax Benefit form. If he has any difficulty filling in the form then he could ask for help from the council or from your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).
