Benefits for my baby

Question

I'm a single mother and my son has recently been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Does this entitle me to any benefits?

Answer

It's possible for a child suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to be classed as disabled and therefore, to be entitled to a statement of special educational needs. As such, your son could be entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

If he is granted DLA, you may be entitled to extra help through the Child Tax Credit system. But, it's not possible to say for certain as application for DLA is assessed individually against a set of national criteria.

You may be able to get some advice about ADHD and DLA from The National Attention Deficit Disorder Information and Support Service or the charity Contact a Family . In addition, many Citizens' Advice Bureaux (CAB) have a form-filling service, so your local CAB maybe able to help with filling in the DLA form.
