Shoplift scare
Question
I was caught shoplifting food from a shop. I've never tried to steal anything before and I am really ashamed of myself for trying to do it.
They took my name, but not my address or any other details, and sent me away with a letter saying: "You are not permitted to enter into any of our stores again... You may wish to take legal advice".
What kind of legal advice do I need now? Does this mean I will have a criminal record?
Answer
If the shop only took your name and no other information, it's unlikely they intend to take it any further. The shop will not have any details to pass on to the police to identify you and if the police aren't involved it's impossible for you to receive a criminal record.
It's likely that the letter suggests you take legal advice in reference to you being banned from any of these stores, rather than any criminal prosecution.
To help set your mind at rest, you might like to talk the situation through with a solicitor. Many firms offer a short interview for free and your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) should be able to help you arrange a meeting.
