Returning rings

Question

I recently broke up with my fiancé. On top of everything else he's asked for the ring back, do I have any legal right to keep it?

Answer

When a relationship breaks up gifts given to each other (and this includes an engagement ring) can be kept by the person who received the gift unless there was a prior agreement saying that it would be returned. This tends to only apply when the ring was a family heirloom. So unless this applies he has no legal right to ask for the ring back.
