Reprimands and records
Question
I want to apply for a gap year course, but I'm worried they'll ask if I have any criminal convictions. Basically, I was caught shoplifting when I was 12. I got let off with a warning, but does that count as something I should admit?
Answer
If you were let off with a reprimand issued by the police then you do not have a criminal record or a criminal conviction. This means you have a clean sheet should you be questioned about records or convictions in a gap year application. If they ask if you have ever been in trouble with the police then you should answer truthfully.
After five years, any reprimand received is automatically removed from your records. For more information about this you may want to contact your local Youth Offending Team and talk through any issues surrounding offences committed when you were younger.
