Proof of age

Question

I have just turned 18 and have a provisional driving licence which I thought I'd be able to use as proof of age. I went to the local pub and was told they wouldn't accept it, only a full driving licence or passport. Can they choose not to accept my provisional license? Do I have any other options than getting a passport?

Answer

At the present time we don't have a national identity card and there's nothing laid down in law to define what are acceptable means of identification. Any pub, club or shop can decide who it will or will not allow into its premises and the forms of identity it will or will not accept.

Passports and driving licences are the most commonly accepted and, ultimately, you have to go along with the venue's policy.
