In a barney

Question

Is it possible to get married in a falling down barn? It used to be a permanent structure but it no longer has a roof. If not, are there any alternatives?

Answer

Unfortunately you can't get married in the barn for two reasons. Firstly, at the moment, weddings can only be held in permanent structures, so the barn wouldn't be an approved place for weddings. Secondly, even if you made an application, it would be rejected on the grounds that the barn doesn't have a roof.

One possibility is to have a small formal wedding at the local registry office to make sure you are legally married. Then you could choose to have a big ceremony at the barn where you could draw up your own vows, play your own songs and have someone you want to lead the ceremony.

To find out more about approved venues for getting married, contact your local council. You might also find it helpful to read more about UK marriage laws and the issues to think about before you get married.
