Contract complaint

Question

How do I get out of a contract with my mobile phone network? They say I'm tied in for 12 months but I've not signed anything.

Answer

It's difficult to say for certain without knowing more details but the likelihood is that you will have to see out the 12 months or be forced to pay compensation. A consumer contract doesn't have to be written down or signed in order to hold, so if you agreed verbally then there's not much you can do.

If you didn't know there was a 12-month contract then you could try making a complaint to the company - they should have made it clear from the start. Otherwise you'll probably have to wait it out.

If you're struggling to pay, or are desperate to move to another network, you could try reducing the tariff on your existing network to the lowest possible rate until the 12 months is up.
