Bad dad

Question

I'm eight months pregnant and not with the father because he's been horrible ever since I found out. He's been seeing other women and constantly drinks and sells drugs to support his addictions.

I dont want my child to have any contact with this man, but he has already said he will be taking me to court to get access. What are his chances of getting custody/access? I won't be registering him on the baby's birth certificate, but is there anything else I can do?

Answer

The father of your child won't have parental responsibility, unless you agree to it and from what you say you won't do that. Certainly he can go to court to get parental responsibility or a contact order but you would be in a position to challenge his right to have contact or anything else to do with your child because of his behaviour.

You may want to contact a local family law solicitor to represent you, if he should take you to court. It's possible that you could get some help to pay your legal fees and the Community Legal Advice (CLS) website has a calculator to see if you are entitled to any help.
