Athlete's foot

No, you don't have to be an athlete to get it.

Don't neglect your feet

What is it?

  • Athlete's foot is a fungal skin infection, affecting as many as 10-15% of the UK population.
  • Most commonly picked up in communal changing areas, where people walk barefoot, and infected skin cells are shed.

Signs and symptoms

  • Symptoms include dry, sore skin with peeling white patches, particularly between the toes.
  • Affected skin may also crack, and become infected with bacteria.
  • If ignored, the condition can spread to infect the toenails and soles of the feet.

Treatments

  • Anti-fungal creams and/or powders are available over the counter from your chemist. If the problem persists, see your GP. In extreme cases, you may be given a course of tablets.

Prevention

  • Wash feet regularly, especially after exercise, and dry thoroughly.
  • Let your towel dry after use. Don't let it fester in a heap, as you'll just increase the chances of the bacteria thriving.
  • Wear cotton socks to allow air to circulate and feet to breathe.
