Pile on the pounds
Question
I want to know how to put on weight safely and healthily. Can you help?
Answer
It's always a good idea to speak to your local doctor (GP) for guidance on how to gain weight sensibly. Not only will they be able to discuss healthy eating and exercise with you, but they will also be aware of your medical history, so can advise you appropriately.
Calorie-dense foods such as avocados, bananas, peanut butter and milk should help you to gain weight. Protein (lean meats, dairy products, nuts and beans) and carbohydrate-rich foods (unrefined bread, rice, potatoes, pasta), fruit and vegetables, and unsaturated fats will also help.
As well as the right individual foods, your focus should also be on making sure you are actually eating enough (and so getting sufficient calories). Therefore, be sure to incorporate snacks in between your main meals.
When it comes to exercise, experts recommend we take aerobic exercise between three and five times a week, however weight bearing exercise is also important, as it's a good way to build up muscle.
Speaking to a dietician, as well as your doctor, may help further. They will be able to give you detailed information on how to put on weight, and even provide you with a weight gain plan especially suited to you and your situation.
