Question

I take carbamazepine for a mental health problem I had seven years ago. My employers are asking all employees to complete a form detailing any medication that they take and any mental illness they have experienced in order to have a driving permit. I'm concerned that I will be dismissed when my employers find out about my medical history.

My licence is renewed every three years and my employers are also asking whether driving licences have ever been refused - which mine was after the episode. Do I have to disclose these details? Can they ask my doctor for medical records if I don't?

Answer

Understandably, you sound concerned about the security of your job. This must be putting a lot of pressure on you. It sounds like you have moved forward in your life since this happened. Even though you are still being prescribed carbamazepine, your employer would have to take into account this positive change in your circumstances.

Revealing your medical history to your employer is not necessarily compulsory, but there are advantages to discussing your history of mental illness. Once your employer is aware of your situation, they may be able to support your needs more effectively in the future. Still, it is understandable you're concerned about the impact that divulging this information could have on your job security.
