Mood mess

Question

My moods are really extreme. One minute I'm really hyper and can't stop running about and talking, and then the next I'm really depressed.

It's been happening a lot lately. I'm fed up of not being able to tell anyone how I feel because I don't want to hurt my mum, and my friends have got their own problems. Who can I talk to?

Answer

Feeling you can't talk to your family or friends must be terribly isolating, but please be reassured that you need not be alone.

Mood swings, like the ones you describe, can be the result of a number of triggers including: stress; diet; lifestyle; general health and mental health. Whilst your local doctor (GP) will be able to offer medical advice, there are people you can talk to on the phone, particularly if you are feeling depressed. SANELINE is a national, out of hours mental health helpline you can call between 12pm-2am on 0845 767 8000. A trained volunteer will be able to offer confidential, non-judgemental emotional support and practical advice.

At the same time, it may be that your Mum has noticed your mood swings too. Perhaps she is equally as concerned and it may be beneficial to talk about how you are feeling to her. Alternatively, you can always contact askTheSite again.
