Question

My skin is never as good as I would like, can you tell me what vitamins would improve the quality of my skin? I don't want to shell out for a bottle of something when there's a natural alternative.

Answer

There are a number of vitamins which can help your complexion. Vitamin B2 is good for skin and can be found in milk, liver, yeast, cheese, fish, and green leafy vegetables. Vitamin B6 is good for preventing skin conditions and can be found in fish, bananas, chicken, pork, whole grains, and dried beans. Also good for healthy skin is vitamin B3, found in meat, fish, pulses, wholegrains, and nuts, and vitamin B8 found in nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and citrus fruits.

Vitamins A, B, C and E help the skin to repair itself, and stay moist and healthy. They fight off free radicals, which attack cells in our body and can speed up aging of the skin. If you would like to start taking vitamin supplements you can buy them from health food shops and chemists.

There are other things that you can do, apart from taking vitamins, to look after your skin.

If you have any other questions about vitamins and your diet please speak to your local doctor (GP). You may be able get a referral from your GP to speak to a dietician who can give you further advice on good food sources of vitamins and healthy eating in general.
