Pregnancy sex sickness
Question
I am five months pregnant and sex makes me feel nauseous. It kicks in soon after sleeping with my husband, and usually lasts until the next day. Is there anything that can be done?
Answer
It's common for pregnant women to feel sick at different times during pregnancy, and sex is a case in point. Most commonly, women report feeling queasy during or after intercourse. This can be be due to lying flat on your back, which causes the enlarged uterus to compress the veins in the back of your abdomen. This reduces blood pressure, causing nausea and lightheadedness.
If you're lying on your back during sex it might be worth trying a different position. One suggestion would be to try from behind or side by side with your partner.
There are various remedies and methods intended to combat nausea during pregnancy that you may find helpful. These include eating little and often and also eating ginger.
If you have any questions or concerns relating to your pregnancy please be aware that you can contact your local doctor (GP) for advice.
