Pee panic

Question

Whenever I have sex I end up peeing a little, it's so embarrassing and is really taking the enjoyment out of it for me. Is there anything I can do to stop it happening?

Answer

Urinating during sex is actually quite a common occurrence among women, with around a quarter reporting they have experienced it. You may find simply making sure you empty your bladder before sex makes a difference.

Women who experience urinary stress incontinence may 'leak' urine when they laugh, sneeze or orgasm and this becomes increasingly common following childbirth.

If the feeling you might pee occurs only during sex then it may be possible that the feeling of an impending orgasm is becoming confused with the sensation of needing to urinate. Given how close the clitoris and urethra are it's almost impossible to stimulate one without moving the other and this could be causing the problem.

Tightening your pelvic floor muscles may help with the problem and there are simple exercises you can do (called "Kegels") to achieve this. This can help control the urge to urinate that many women experience close to orgasm.

If you feel the problem is having a serious effect on your life you may also want to discuss the situation with your local doctor (GP), to see what alternative solutions they may be able to suggest.
