Papule problem

Question

Is there a treatment for pearly penile papules? I know they're harmless and I shouldn't feel this way, but I really hate seeing them. I haven't even been able to talk to my girlfriend about it, I'm that embarrassed. It's really affecting my life, what can I do?

Answer

Pearly penile papules are completely harmless and aren't contagious. The exact cause is unknown, but they are very common.

It sounds like your self-esteem has taken a bit of a knock throughout the time you've had these penile papules. If you're concerned about them, you could speak to your local doctor (GP) about being referred to a urologist to see if, in your case, it's possible to remove them. Laser treatment is sometimes available, but this isn't always appropriate.

Have you spoken to someone about the effect they are having on you psychologically? Although you haven't been able to talk to your girlfriend about it, it might be something you could try in the future. Talking about how you feel may bring you closer together.

You say you 'shouldn't feel this way'. Try not to think that there is a right, or a wrong, way to feel about your body. Ultimately, these papules are having no ill-effect on your physical health, but perhaps speaking to your doctor about how they make your feel emotionally may help.
