Miscarriage misery

Question

I have had three miscarriages and after each one my periods quickly went back to normal, but the last four months have been very strange. I missed a period, then had one, then missed one and then the last one came early. Can you tell me why this could be happening?

Answer

It sounds like you've had a hard time recently. It's not clear how long it's been since your third miscarriage but it could be that your periods are trying to regulate themselves again.

It may also be that your body is still trying to adjust to hormonal changes after your miscarriages. Have you had any significant lifestyle changes recently? It's worth remembering that changes in weight and even stress can affect your periods.

It would possibly be a good idea to speak to your local doctor (GP). They can examine you to check that everything is as it should be and, if necessary, refer you to a gynaecologist. This is usual when a woman has had three miscarriages in a row, sometimes known as Recurrent Spontaneous Miscarriage.

Apart from the physical changes you have been experiencing, you may also want some emotional support or to speak to someone who knows how you are feeling. As well as talking to your doctor, you can call The Miscarriage Association helpline on 01924 200799 (Mon-Fri, 9am - 4pm).
