Healthy diet, healthy nails

Question

I've recently noticed white patches on my nails. Could this be the start of an infection, or is it a sign of something else?

Answer

White patches on your nails can be caused by a variety of things. They can be caused by knocks to the nails, so if you've been doing a lot of work with yours hands recently this could be what's causing the problem. In addition, they can be a sign of a slight zinc deficiency, and if this is causing the problem you might want to look into taking a vitamin supplement.

A healthy diet is important in maintaining healthy nails, and because nails usually reflect a person's general health, eating well can only help.

It might be a good idea to see your local doctor (GP) to put your mind at ease. That way you'll know for certain what the cause is. You could also call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 what might be happening.
