Question

I was wondering, is there is anything I can eat to change the way my vagina smells?

Answer

Firstly, it's worth remembering that a healthy vagina does have a natural, mild musky smell. But we are often conditioned to think that any bodily odours are bad.

We're not aware of any specific foods that can affect the smell of the vagina. But highly spiced food, smoking and lots of alcohol could well change your vaginal odour, just like they can underarm odour. There are a number of companies that claim to sell food supplements that can change the smell of a vagina, but there seems to be little evidence this works.

If the smell from your vagina is very strong and unpleasant and has changed recently, it's possible that you have an infection of some kind. For example, bacterial vaginosis often creates a fish-like smell, and a smell of yeast is often a sign of thrush.

If this is the case, I'd suggest a visit to a doctor for a check-up and to get any infections or other problems treated. You could go to your local doctor (GP) or, if you'd prefer to see a doctor who doesn't know you, you could go to a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic in complete confidence.
