Dismorphia difficulties

Question

Hi, I'm feeling trapped by the way I look. I can't stand to do or wear anything that will show off my legs. I can't even stand seeing myself naked in a mirror.

I feel like I'm becoming increasingly obsessed, I realise on some level that I'm not being rational. I just can't seem to accept how I look no matter how much I diet or exercise.

Is there anything I can do to stop feeling this way, just to like myself?

Answer

It certainly sounds as if have become obsessed with your perceived body problems. In fact, you may have a condition called body dysmorphia. This is where a person becomes so obsessed about their appearance that it may completely take over their life. You can read more about body dysmorphic disorder, and the treatments available for it, from the National Phobics Society (NPS).

You may also find it helpful to read the section on Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) on the OCD Action website. OCD Action is a UK based charity providing information, advice and support for people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and related disorders such as BDD.

Of course, it's not possible to diagnose a condition over the internet, therefore I would strongly recommend that you go and see your local doctor (GP) and discuss your feelings. This will take a lot of courage on your part, but it's important that you tell it how it really is. If by any chance you don't get on with - or like -  your doctor, then this would probably be a good time to find another one who you can talk to. The doctor will not ultimately be the person who will help you, but he or she should know of a specialist who they can refer you to for the treatment you need.
