Bored of the rings
Question
I've had dark shadows under both eyes for about three years. I don't sleep very well and I'm also a heavy drinker - could these factors be to blame?
Answer
In most cases, dark circles around the eyes are perfectly natural and are either inherited from your parents or due to a pale complexion in comparison to the area around the eyes.
Dark areas under the eyes can be a sign of fatigue too, which can be caused by disturbed sleeping patterns. If this is the case, you may find it useful to follow some tips on sleeping easy. Also, dehydration as a result of heavy drinking can cause circles under the eyes, so your condition may improve if you cut down your alcohol intake. If you'd like support in dealing with your drinking, you could speak to an expert adviser at Drinkline by calling 0800 9178282. Drinkline offers confidential and free telephone help, information and advice on all aspects of alcohol use and abuse.
Unfortunately, there are no reliable short-term treatments for dark rings under the eyes. However, you may be able to get further advice by visiting your local doctor (GP). He or she will also be able to offer support on any difficulties you have with sleeping or cutting down your drinking.
