Balding blues
Question
I'm only 22 years old but seem to be losing my hair at the back of my head. Is this normal for someone my age? My dad has not lost his hair, why me?
Answer
It's not uncommon to start losing hair at your age. There're many reasons for hair loss, including health (e.g. stress and diet) as well as hereditary factors. Baldness can be due to a combination of genes from both parents and this might explain why your father has not lost his hair but you are losing yours.
Although hair loss is a natural process, some people are uncomfortable with it. If you want to try to treat your hair loss, there are a few options available, including medication and plastic surgery (such as hair transplants). But often these treatments are expensive and not long lasting.
You might find it reassuring to speak to your local doctor (GP) about your hair loss. They could then examine you and determine whether your hair loss is health related or not. You will be able to discuss your concerns with them, and if you are looking for further information about treatments they should be able to give you some advice that's appropriate for you.
