Drugs during pregnancy
Question
I've just found out that I'm eight weeks pregnant. What's freaking me out is that, until now, I've been boozing and smoking as usual. I've also done a couple of lines of coke, and I'm terrified I might've harmed my baby.
Answer
Your situation is not uncommon. Women often carry on with their normal lives before they find out they are pregnant - which can include use of drink and drugs. Once they find out, it's understandable that their first priority is the welfare of their unborn child.
The fact is that using illegal drugs during pregnancy is unhealthy for the mother and baby. Regular use of cocaine during pregancy, for example, can lead to birth defects, or even prove fatal to the baby. But it's important to stress that giving up at the earliest opportunity, as you have, will increase the chances of a healthy baby.
The best thing for you to do is to talk to your doctor (GP) about your concerns. You'll be treated in confidence, and the health of both you and the baby will be their number one priority. If you don't feel ready to go to your GP, you could ring NHS Direct for advice on 0845 4647. They will be able to provide more information based on your level of drink and drug use, and give you information about your options.
