Do I need help?

Question

I started using cocaine a year ago. At first I just took it on weekends but now it's starting to escalate into weekdays too. Do you think I need help? I know I shouldn't be doing it and I'm worried I'll want it every day soon. Is there anything I can do?

Answer

It sounds as if your cocaine use is giving you cause for concern. You are doing the right thing in trying to find out more information about your usage. Cocaine is one of those drugs that makes people feel like they're on top of the world when they are using it and addiction can happen before you know it therefore it is important to know about the risks and effects, the law and risk of addiction.

Cocaine is a very powerful drug and although you don't get addicted instantly you may find that overtime that you would need to take more to achieve the "buzz" therefore having to spend more money to fund your use and sometimes using more frequently.

You can refer yourself into community based substance misuse services by ringing them up. This would be a good starting point for you. Community based services offer different types of support and a key worker will guide you through the process of developing an action plan for reducing drug use. These services can also link you in with rehab treatment if you choose. There are a number of local services in your area that provide free and confidential support.

Good luck.
