Wine spasms

Question

After drinking alcohol, I've occasionally had body spasms the following day. I think there might be a connection between the spasms and drinking white wine, but I'm not sure. The last couple of times I've had these spasms I've actually fallen to the floor and dropped things. Should I get myself checked out?

Answer

It sounds like you're having some scary experiences, although it's difficult to say what's causing your spasms. The spasms may be connected to drinking white wine, as you suggested; there may be ingredients in the wine that give you an allergic reaction. It's not usually the alcohol itself that causes allergies; it's more likely to be down to other components used in the wine-making process, such as yeast, eggs, mould, and pesticides. Also, bear in mind that certain medications can cause side effects when mixed with alcohol.

If these spasms only happen when you drink, the best option is for you is to avoid alcohol altogether and to talk to your doctor (GP) as soon as possible about your symptoms. You can also ring or email NHS Direct for health advice and information without having to go into the doctor's surgery.
