Question

Will the fact that my boyfriend smokes weed affect my chances of getting pregnant with him?

Answer

It's an exciting and scary time for a couple when they start to think about having a baby. It's a big responsibility and you're wise to find out more about how your current lifestyle affects your health and fertility. It's also important to think about how it might affect a baby's health. Because of this it's worth finding out more about the risks and effects of smoking weed (cannabis).

A lot of research is being done into the influence of weed on fertility. The evidence suggests that it does reduce fertility but, currently, not enough research has been completed to draw definite conclusions. Cannabis probably does affect fertility but it depends on how much, and how long, your partner has been smoking and his health in general. This doesn't mean he's infertile, just that there might be some effect on the amount of sperm available.

If you've been trying to get pregnant for a long time without success it might be useful to seek medical advice. You can visit your local doctor (GP) or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. If your partner would like to get support to find out more about the effects of smoking cannabis or how to cut down, he can contact Frank on 0800 776600.
