Unwanted side-effects
Question
My boyfriend stopped using cocaine about three years ago, after taking it for years. We're now having problems with sex and I was wondering whether lack of libido from cocaine could occur after such a long time?
Answer
A reduction in sex drive is a common side effect of cocaine use but it's important not to jump to conclusions because there are many causes for reduced libido.
Cocaine and other drugs have an effect on libido both whilst the person is using and in the long-term, but everybody is different. Whether or not your boyfriend is affected by his use three years ago is difficult to determine. The best thing you can do is try a process of elimination, including a look at any prescribed medication he may be using, like antidepressants, as they can be one of the hidden culprits of male sexual issues.
Of course, the best thing you can do is to talk to each other about your concerns and support each other to find out what's going on. If you want to get some further information and support you can call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or talk to your local doctor (GP). If you would like support on relationship issues Relate can provide face to face, online or phone counselling.
