Booze or baby?

Question

My girlfriend and I are trying for a baby. She doesn't drink, but I enjoy a whiskey or two every other day. Shes concerned that if I drink any alcohol at all it will decrease my fertility. Is this true?

Answer

When you're trying for a baby, you're going to increase your chances by being fit and healthy. Drinking alcohol a few times a week may not seem like a lot, but it can affect your fertility by lowering the sperm count.

In addition to avoiding alcohol, most advice on increasing fertility suggests that both partners should try to eat healthy food, take vitamins, and avoid caffeine as well.

The most effective approach to cutting out drink is to gradually reduce the amount of alcohol you drink. It doesn't sound as if you are consuming much, so it should be easy to cut it down or even quit. If you would like to receive more information on increasing fertility, contact NHS Direct or visit your doctor (GP).
