Is the smoking ban a good idea?

Will the smoking ban encourage us to give up fags, or will we adapt to smoking outside of public places?

Alex

Alex, 16 I definitely think the smoking ban will reduce the number of smokers. You won't see so many people smoking when you're out so it won't have so much of a 'cool' factor relating to it.

Andrew

Andrew, 18 I really do believe the ban will help reduce smokers. In New York, where I'm from, when the ban came into effect a lot of people quit. The State was very good at making more services available to help people quit and I think the rates have improved a lot.

Mohammed

Mohammed C, 17 I don't think the ban will have much of an effect on the amount of smokers. I actually think it will make more people smoke because many don't like authority and want to break rules and boundaries.

Renee

Renee, 18 I don't think that banning smoking completely will encourage that many people to stop smoking. People will still smoke indoors behind others' backs. The good thing about it is that non-smokers will benefit from not having to breathe in other people's smoke.

Chris

Chris, 19 I think that everything to do with smoking should be banned. It's a horrible product that's killing millions of people worldwide and I don't think we should kill people to make money. Young people are the cigarette manufacturers' potential market. The earlier they get people to smoke, the more money they make. I definitely think the ban will help people to quit as people don't want to be bothered with the hassle of going outside to smoke.

Mohammed

Mohammed A, 17 Because under 16s aren't allowed to smoke it makes many want to do it as they see it as a bad thing. I think that the smoking ban will have a similar problem and that it will cause more unnecessary problems for the police. They are already arresting people for petty crimes and now they're going to start arresting us for smoking indoors.

Seun

Seun, 25 Athough the smoking ban isn't going to stop people smoking altogether, it will go a long way in reducing it in the long term. People can still smoke outside of the office and that will carry on being an encouragement for others to start smoking.

Siham

Siham, 18 Even with the ban you can still find places to smoke. It will definitely put a lot of people off smoking, but if you're addicted then there's no way you would give it up completely. It may even encourage people to start taking drugs if they feel they have more opportunity to get away with it in public places.
