Online Mentoring

Horsesmouth
Horsesmouth is a safe, purpose-built, confidential website for informal e-mentoring. We are looking for anyone who has an experience to share and is aged sixteen plus to volunteer and become a mentor. At sixteen or indeed 60 you may be wondering what qualifies you to be a mentor. Well you don't have to have any training or qualifications. Horsesmouth is not a professional advisory service. What it is, however, is a sounding board for those occasions in life when people really want to talk to someone whos been there and done that. So, if you have some time to spare (10 minutes or 10 hours) you can help support and inspire others by registering as a mentor. From starting a business to starting a family; from life with cancer to life as a carer; from which A level, NVQ or undergraduate course to whither an MBA; someone needs what you know. As a mentor you will be asked to complete a fairly thought provoking questionnaire. It shouldnt take any longer than 15 minutes to complete, but after its been approved you can get online and respond to calls for help.A key principle of the Horsesmouth site is that we all have something to give and gain so in addition to mentoring someone, you may find your own mentor on Horsesmouth.

Letter-writingYou might be interested in writing letters to local politicians, MEPs and influential groups about important issues, giving invaluable support to our conservation lobby. Your help could make a difference.Specialist skillsIf you have a specialist skill, give us a call to see if we could use it. For example, a number of people volunteer with us as translators, others edit and write reports. Could you make props and toys to help educate young people about birds and the environment?Other ways you could helpOther ways you could help include distributing leaflets or putting out collecting tins to help us raise funds and recruit new members. As a sufferer of mental health problems, I wanted to do something useful for others and to help build my confidence. I started by entering all the regions press clippings onto a spreadsheet and analysing the information. I then helped to get the south-west region online. I learnt so much. There is so much more to RSPB work than meets the eye. Alison Terry, media volunteer for the RSPBs South West Regional Office
