E-befriender

National Autistic Society

The e-befriending scheme offers people with autism the chance to build friendships with a trained volunteer through email. E-befriending takes on average 1 hour a week and can be done from home or from anywhere that you have internet access. This new service is a supplement to the befriending service and will provide people with autism the opportunity to learn social and communication skills in a way that may be more suitable to them.

Telephone Support Befriender

ACE, Alzheimer's Concern (Ealing)

You can undertake this volunteering opportunity from your home when you have completed your training. If you enjoy chatting on the phone - and helping someone at the same time - this might be the volunteering role for you! The 'Listening Ear' Volunteer Telephone Support Service provides telephone support to people with dementia and their carers. This will involve a regular session in our office, calling people with dementia and carers and having a chat about how they are. People with dementia and their carers can become very socially isolated and this service aims to help them feel less alone.

The National Autistic Society matches volunteers to families and individuals who have something in common. By giving some of your time you could really open up this world and support their inclusion in society. You could really make a difference.

Volunteers are needed to run Self-Help groups on the telephone, these groups are specifically structured to aid anxiety sufferers. If preferred one-to-one 1 week courses, also over an 8 week period and this would involve one-to-one with sufferers.Trainee voluntees undergo 8 week training programme by phone and once trained they are closely supervised and monitored for the first three months.Volunteers attend monthly Volunteer Support Group Meeting (on the phone).The 0845 helpline is from 10am to 10pm and volunteers work one 4 hour shift per week when the helpline is switched over to each volunteer's home telephone.

Volunteers support people who have been affected by crime. This includes calling them and offering practical support such as help with an insurance claim. You achieve great emotional support in just listening. You may visit people in their homes or elsewhere to talk things through.One you have volunteered for about six months, there's an option of specialising with further training in, for example, domestic violence, sexual violence, young victims or supporting young people bereaved by crime.
