Terrible tampons
Question
Some of my friends told me using tampons could cause scarring and desensitise my vagina so I won't feel anything when I'm having sex. I really don't want to stop using them but if this is true I think I'll have to. Can this really happen?
Answer
This is a myth. If used correctly, a tampon will not cause you any problems sexually or cause any scarring.
Tampons fit inside the vagina and are made of cotton. They absorb the menstrual blood before it leaves the vagina. Tampons are inserted into the vagina through an applicator or with a finger. There are different sizes and types. Packs come with full instructions including diagrams on how to insert and remove them. Once inserted, they cannot be felt and they have a string to help with removal.
Like anything it can take a bit of practice to learn how to use them and feel confident about them. It is possible to use tampons even if you haven't had sex before. When inserting a tampon it's important to follow the instructions on the packet to ensure you insert it at the right angle into the vagina and you're not in any discomfort. Make sure you're feeling relaxed and in a comfortable position before you try to insert it. If it feels uncomfortable, remove it and try again. You should not be able to feel you're wearing a tampon if you have put it in correctly.
