Question

I've just found out I have thrush but I'm on my period. Can I use tampons whilst I'm treating the infection?

Answer

According to Women's Health 'tampons and towels may play a part in creating the right environment for thrush. If a tampon is left in too long (more than about 12 hours), it can dry out the vagina, change the pH balance and trigger thrush'.

If you're still worried about the infection you can get advice at a genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic. Services are located attached to or within local hospitals. GUM consultations are free and confidential, which means no one will be told about your visit, unless you want them to be.

You can also contact Sexual Health Direct and speak to a nurse on 0845 310 1334.
