Missing menstruation
Question
I recently stopped taking my pill, after taking it for four years and I haven't had a period yet. I have had sex since coming off the pill but we've been using condoms. I just wanted to know how long it might take for my period to come back.
Answer
When you stop taking hormonal contraceptives your period may not start again for anything between one month and a year. The amount of time it will take for your periods to return can depend on the type of pill you were taking and individual factors that might affect you personally. Because different pills work in different ways it's best to get medical advice about your situation from the service that supplied your pill or you can speak to a nurse via the fpa helpline on 0845 310 1334.
If you can't, or don't want to, go back to the service that supplied your pill you can also visit your local family planning clinic or Brook centre (under 25s only) for further information and advice.
