Inside out

Question

The other night my boyfriend started to roll a condom on and quickly realised it was inside out. He turned it the right way and we carried on as normal. I'm now really worried because I remember hearing something about this being risky as some sperm that's been released before ejaculation could have got onto the outside of the condom. Is this true? Could I be pregnant?

Answer

It is true that putting a condom on inside out and then putting it on the right way again is risky. This is because the penis leaks a few drops of semen (liquid containing sperm) as soon as it is hard and this could have got onto the condom.

If you're concerned that this happened, you might still be able to use emergency contraception. There are two forms of emergency contraception: the emergency contraceptive pill and the emergency intrauterine device (IUD). Emergency contraceptive pills must be taken up to 72 hours (three days) after sex, but an IUD can be fitted as an emergency contraceptive up to five days after sex. The IUD has to be fitted by a specially trained doctor or nurse so you should check with the appropriate service (your local doctor (GP), family planning clinic or Brook Centre) to see if they offer this before going.

If you want to discuss your situation, you can call the Brook Helpline on 0800 0185 023.
