Copious come
Question
I've been sleeping with my new boyfriend for a while now but I'm worried about how much he's ejaculating. Basically, with my new boyfriend some stuff seems to leak out of the base of the condom after he's reached orgasm. Sometimes it leaks over me.
He seems to ejaculate so much fluid. Is there a way we can limit this? Would an erection ring be useful? I really don't want to get an STI or fall pregnant because of this. Can you help?
Answer
The average amount of fluid a man ejaculates is about 4ml, which a condom would be capable of holding. Some men will ejaculate more than this and some less so it might be worth trying different condoms. They come in different shapes and sizes and you may find one that suits your boyfriend better. You could also consider using female condoms, which are larger than male condoms.
There are several products that can help slow or prevent ejaculation, including rings, delay lubricants and delay condoms. You may want to try some of these and see if they help. But if this is something that is causing you and your boyfriend concern, it may be helpful to talk it through with a doctor or nurse.
You can speak to a nurse via the fpa helpline on 0845 310 1334, or NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. Alternatively, you can get medical advice from a doctor at your local Brook Centre, Family Planning Clinic or from your doctor (GP).
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be passed on through sexual fluids, such as semen and vaginal fluids but it is possible to be treated for infections. Most infections are easily treated so if you and your boyfriend are concerned about STIs, then you may want to get tested for STIs to put your mind at rest.
You can get advice and testing at a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. GUM consultations are free and confidential, which means that no one will be told about your visit, unless you want them to be.
If you'd like to discuss your situation further you can call the Brook Helpline in complete confidence on 0808 802 1234.
