Chris Vickers with his film ’Times of change’

Chris’ film depicts his personal interpretation of how we look at money and how this changed during the recession. His bronze coin sculpture cleverly spelt out the film’s title by using five-hundred two pence coins, studio lights and the resulting shadows. The amazing artwork took him over 11 hours to build, capture and then destroy. Twenty-one year-old Chris won £1000 for his efforts (presented to him in a beautiful golden piggy bank), which he plans to spend on a brand new Macbook Pro to help him with his graphic design course (we’re so jealous!).

£300 runner-up cheques were also awarded to Brigitte Sutherland, 23, for her illustration, ‘Seven Months’; Connor Matheson, 17, for his haunting photo montage ‘Ghost Town’; and Andrea Bowie, 23, for her short film ‘The Fightback Starts Here’.

The awards were announced at a ceremony at the Design Museum in London on Tuesday (May 25). Chloe Madeley and Martyn Lewis hosted the evening, with the judges (including Charlie McDonnell, artist Matthew Stone and animator Nigel Davies) presenting awards in each category. Music was provided by DJ Nonames from renowned British hip-hop crew The Foreign Beggars and a venue decorated with piggy-bank piñatas, a money tree, and most importantly, all the shortlisted entrants work.  Chris also created a mini-installations of his work at the event.   Check out the video below for a taster of the evening.

My name is Maytal Yarkoni, I’m 23 and I’m studying illustration in Maidstone. At first I thought, what do I really know about the recession here in England? But on  second thought I realised I can give somewhat of an outsider point of view. as I’m here only temporarily and I’m a foreigner from Israel. this is just a simple story of the characters I meet on the way to work. They are the everyday characters we all meet, but the ones who I see the effect of the recession on.

Through this image I wanted to express the simplest of impacts that the recession had on people… losing a job. Probably every one of us knows at least one person who has been dismissed from their job during the long months of the recession. I wanted to show the feeling of powerlessness after receiving a letter telling you that you no longer have a job, especially when the bills are stacking up, and the bank loan is overdue.

I tried to use Japanese – anime style of drawing to create this comic because reading Manga and watching anime is my way of escape from reality.

However I wanted to illustrate how recession has even affected our means of escape since now I have to think twice before buying the latest volume of whatever it is I’m reading.

I drew Dr Rece Ession in a style different to the other characters because I wanted to show how he doesn’t belong and is now even interfering with fanatasy worlds.

We go through the education system – A Levels and then degrees in hope of receiving the prize of a well paid job. However now that the recession has struck – this prize is very rare.

The deadline for new entries has now passed. Thank you to all those who entered, we have thoroughly enjoyed receiving your handiwork, and we’re over the moon that so many of you have entered.

It’s now over to the judges, who will be ‘umming and ahhhing’ over the next few weeks, deciding which photos, illustrations and videos to put through to the shortlist stage.  Those that are shortlisted will be notified by the May 14 and will be invited to attend our glitzy evening event at the London Design Museum on the May 25; where your work will be displayed and the winners announced!  We’re all very excited about the evening – we’ve got some brilliant surprises in store!

I have been fascinated by Western capitalism’s jealous stockpiling of wealth and subsequent paranoia at its inevitable demise.

Recession: The Famous UK Store was recently shut down because of recession and thousands people lost their jobs . I wanted to show how one thing can effect people.
