The flatmate family

Shared flats are often like the classic family home. Tenants take on roles and responsibilities of certain family members and behave accordingly.

Take a look at our family member profiles below and see which flatmates of yours fit the bill. But remember, in this crazy mixed up back-to-front work we live, mums aren't always female, nor dads male.

Mums

  • Likes the flat to be spick'n'span so ends up doing more than their share of housework.
  • Listens carefully and sympathetically to other flatmate's problems.
  • Worries when another flatmate doesn't come home of a night.
  • Worries even more when another flatmate brings home a partner with crazy hair/drug habit/no job.

Dads

  • Makes sure everyone pays the bills on time
  • Has episodes of acute grumpiness, blamed on stress of course workload.
  • Tells flatmates off if they aren't doing any cleaning or pulling their weight financially.
  • Spends far too long on the toilet reading the papers.

Teenagers

  • Leaves smelly socks in the lounge.
  • Makes big meals but doesn't clean up afterwards.
  • Sulks when other flatmates ask them to do something.
  • Spends forever in the bathroom.

Babies

  • Generally disorganised and hopeless with everything
  • Does absolutely nothing round the house
  • Draws on other flatmate's paternal instincts to look out for them.
  • Can get away with anything by smiling cutely
