Testing times
Question
I recently split up with my girlfriend and she's told me she's pregnant. I always remember using protection so I'm not sure I'm the father. How can I check if I am, and what does this mean I'll be liable for?
Answer
If your ex goes to the Child Support Agency (CSA) for maintenance, you can challenge the paternity at this stage. The CSA will arrange a DNA test and if you're not the father they will pay for the cost.
But if it turns out you are the father, you'll need to pay for the test (from about £250) and you'll be responsibile for the maintenance of your child. This can be complicated to work out, but the CSA provides all the information. The four rates they apply to the non-resident parents net weekly income are:
- Basic rate (if they have an income of £200 a week or more)
- Reduced rate (if their income is more than £100 but less than £200 a week)
- Flat rate (if their income is £5 to £100 a week)
- Nil rate (if their income is less than £5 a week
Consideration is also given to other factors, such as how many children require support.
Aside from the financial issues, there are also the issues around your relationship with your ex and your child. It might be worth speaking to Relate on 0845 130 4010 to arrange some time for the two of you to discuss the situation. Bear in mind how you can both contribute to your child's upbringing, outside of a purely financial arrangement.
